Hunters Woods was the first village center built in south Reston. Designed by Cohen-Haft and Associates, it incorporated retail with limited public facilities and office space and included a covered walkway and fountain. Hunters Woods Village Center opened in December 1972, in time for holiday shopping. But over the next 20 years, Hunters Woods faced increased competion from newer shopping centers. Ownership changed several times and in 1996, a new owner proceeded with plans to redevelop the center. During the next two years, the original shopping center was demolished and replaced with strips of shops and condominiums which remain today.
